In extraction of aluminium oxide, molten aluminium oxide is electrolyzed.

At the cathode, aluminium ion is reduced to give aluminium.
Al3+(l) + 3e- → Al(l)

At the anode, oxide ion is oxidized to oxygen gas.
2O2-(l) → O2(g) + 4e-

1a)
Reduction is the (half) reaction in which the oxidation number of an element in the reactant decreases.
Reduction is the (half reaction) in which electrons are gained.

2a)
Oxide ion is oxidized in this process.
