Whenever you're simplifying, try to separate each components, and move them around to get a better view of the equation.

(9x^2)(-3x^2) has

9 ( number 9 )
x^2 ( x times x )
-3 ( -1 times 3 )
x^2 ( again, x times x )

rearranging, we get:

-1 times 9 times 3 times x times x times x times x =
(-1)(9)(3)(x)(x)(x)(x)

now its easier to see that the solution is -27x^4

= (9-3)x^2
= 6x^2

it is 9x(-3)x^(2+2) =-27x^4
