Driver license in New York?

I want to ask if anyone knows that if I am holding a valid Hong Kong driver license, and I'm a student in New York. Do I have to get New York driver license or can I just drive in New York with my Hong Kong license? and do I count as resident?

If you're just a student, you can drive on your foreign license for up to 1 year after arrival. But I would suggest you get a NY license as soon as possible, since you will get cheaper insurance that way.
