x = [ - b ± √ (b ² - 4 a c ) ] / 2 a

x = [ - 2 ± √ (4 + 8) ] / 2

x = [ - 2 ± √ (12) ] / 2

x = [ - 2 ± 2√ 3 ] / 2

x = - 1 ± √ 3

x = [-b ± √(b² - 4*a*c)]/2*a

where: ax² + bx +c

so
a = 2
b = 2
c = -2

x = [-(2) ± √((2)² - 4*2*-2)]/2*(2)
x = [-2 ± √(4 + 16)]/4
x = [-2 ± √(20)]/4
x = [-1 ± √(5)]/2

Also check out this link. It’s a calculator that will give you the roots (solutions) to any quadratic equation. Just enter values for a, b, and c.
http://www.1728.com/quadratc.htm

The quadratic formula is:
x = [-b +/- sqrt(b^2-4ac)]/(2a)

Here, a=1, b=2, c= -2, so:
x=[-2 +/- sqrt(2^2-4*1*-2)]/(2*1)
x=[-2 +/- sqrt(4-(-8))]/2
x=[-2 +/- sqrt(12)]/2
x=[-2 +/- 2 sqrt(3)]/2
x=[-1 +/- sqrt(3)]

As decimals, x=.73205 or x= -2.7321.

x^2 + 2x - 2 = 0
x = [-b ±√(b^2 - 4ac)]/2a

a = 1
b = 2
c = -2

x = [-2 ±√(4 + 8)]/2
x = [-2 ±√12]/2
x = [-2 ±√(2^2 * 3)]/2
x = [-2 ±2√3]/2
x = -1 ±√3

∴ x = -1 ±√3

x= 1+/-sqrt3

(x+1)^2=3

x= -1 +or - sqrt(3)

x = -2.73 or .73
