Hey Kirby,
Your "name" is the name you gave to your game character. You'll need to exchange character names with the person you wish to battle with in order to battle or trade over wifi. For example, your character name may be Kirby, and mine is Ariana. So, I'd give you my character name and you'd give me yours.
FC's are friend codes. Friend codes are different for everyone. They're assigned specifically for your character on the game. To find out your Friend code, go to the bottom level of any Pokemon Center and talk to the woman directly north from the staircase (the right-most counter) and she will give you a Pal Pad. The Pal Pad is where you can register friends using their character names and friend codes. Also, the Pokemon Center is where you normally wifi-battle people. However, you can also connect with people over wifi and do challenges in the Battle Tower, Battle Arcade, etc.
Finding out your friend code is also done through the Pal Pad. The Pal Pad will be in the Key Items slot, and from there, you can "Find My Friend Code" and find your friend code that way. When you have done that, give it to the person you want to battle\trade with. They should also give you their friend code.
To register a friend, simply go to "Register a friend" in the Pal Pad and enter your friend's Name and Friend Code. Your partner should do the same.
When you are both registered in each other's Pal Pads, go to the center counter and ask the woman to connect to Wifi. When you have done so, you will receive contact from the friend\friends you registered who are available on wifi at that time as well.
Hope this helped.
