took and hold???

這句當然沒有錯，在牛津第六版，在hold的條下，也出現同一的句子
而Cambridge Dictionary Online，也有一例
He took hold of the plant's root and pulled
至於你的疑問，可能是為甚麼有兩個動詞，但其實hold在這裏，是名詞，而hold有抓的意思，如：
She tried to keep hold of the child's hand as they walked along.
hold也有擯制的意思，如：
He succeeded in getting a hold of his anger.
而take (a) hold of sth，有抓住之意，如：
He took hold of the door handle and turned it
take (a) hold of sth，也有完全控制之意，正如你的句子
Panic took hold of him and he couldn't move.（直譯：驚慌完全控制了他，使他動彈不得）
