make sure he has some money standby. there are always some unexpected fee.
tell him open a personal checking account ASAP. so all the money can direct wire into his account.
clothing is not important----- he can buy here anytime.
books, study related materials, doesn't mean he can not buy here, but may be hard to find out where to get it.
open a cell phone account here ASAP. no need to use relative home phone---- small thing but people might mind. ( also he can call home with prepaid phone card anytime ).
be nice, respect and prolit to his relative and family members. don't be so picky to things or food.
Remeber, if living in school dorm, it will cost him over 10,000 USD a year.

I think the best way to find out is to contact the relative.

The relative can definitely tell you what to prepare and what do not need to prepare.
