5(x-4)=35
5x-20=35
5x=55
x=11

First you need to devide both sides by 5.
This gives you (x-4) = 7 Remember when it says 5(x-4) it means the 5 is multiplying the whole thing, so you can simply divide the whole thing by 5.

So X-4 = 7
Add 4 on both sides
X=11

5 x - 20 = 35

5 x = 55

x = 11
2009-05-02 1:26 pm
5(x - 4) = 35
5*x - 5*4 = 35
5x - 20 = 35
5x = 35 + 20
x = 55/5
x = 11

x= 11

multiply (x-4) by 5

(5)(x)-(5)(4) = 35
5x - 20 = 35
5x = 35 + 20
5x = 55

then 55 divide by 5
x = 55/5
x = 11

That it!

5x - 20 First use the distributive property
No like terms Combine like terms (if there is any)
5x - 20 Change the opposite of the number to addition.
5x + 20 Add the 20 to the 35 and you get 55.
5x = 55 Divide each side by 5
x = 11

First distribute the 5 to the x and the -4
So 5 times x equals 5x
5 times -4 equals -20
So you have:
5x-20
Add 20 to both sides of the equal sign:
5x-20=35
+20 +20
5x=55

Divide both sides of the equal sign by 5

This is your answer:
x=11

11

Distribute the 5 like this:

5x-20=35

segregate the -20 by adding 20 to both sides

5x-20+20=35+20
5x=55 after combining like terms

divide both sides by the coefficient

5x/5=55/5

x=11

First multiply 5 by x and -4. so 5(x - 4) would turn into 5x-20
so now you have
5x-20=35
add 20 to both sides which will cancel the first 20 leaving you with
5x=35+20
35+20=55 so
5x= 55
then divide by 5 on both sides so
x=11
