Most police officers (if not all), are not armed. The only time I have seen guns in China have been on military personnel during specific times of unrest (I was here in 1989) and on security personnel doing money transfers from truck to bank and vice versa.

Good luck!

I have seen guns in just two situations in China:

1) The military

2) The people who guard the deposits and withdrawals from banks in the armored trucks.

I have lived in China six years.

There are more than one police force in China. The most regularly seen do not carry arms. However there is a separate Armed Police force which do carry guns.

I don't know if the other two answerers have ever been to China, but I don't think so. Of course the police have guns. They all do. So do the armoured truck guys and the military gaurds guarding the government buildings.

It might confuse some people that many security guards dress just like police to make them look like police so people will listen to them. It can be hard to distinguish sometimes.
