因為eight hours of sleep並視作為一個整體（一件事，而不是八件事），所以，就用is
正如， Ten dollars is not much（ten dollars也是被視為一個整體）

sitting at the back of the room are my parents這句是用了倒裝句，如：Here comes the train，impossible is nothing一樣
你大若可以將它改為正常的寫法
my parents are sitting at the back of the of the room.
若這樣寫，你就知為甚麼用are，而不用is

sitting at the back are my parents這句並不是用了倒裝法，讓我們先忘記倒裝法


sitting at the back是這句的主詞，但因為are是linking verb，所以my parents也是這句的主詞l補語，既然主詞補語是my parents，是複數形，也就顯示出主詞是複數形，所以動詞也要用複數形

你主要想形容的是sleep, not hours, so use "is"

你主要想形容的是parents, not the room, so use " are"
