A solution containing 1.45g of a hydroxide compound, X(OH)2, requires 50.0 cm^3 of 1.00M nitric acid for complete neutralization.

(a) Calculate the molar mass fo hydroxide compound.

(b) Calculate the relative atomic mass of X.

(a)
X(OH)2 + 2HNO3 → X(NO3)2 + 2H2O
Mole ratio X(OH)2 : HNO3 = 1 : 2

No. of moles of HNO3 used = 1 x (50/1000) = 0.05 mol
No. of moles of X(OH)2 used = 0.05 x (1/2) = 0.025 mol
Mass of X(OH)2 used = 1.45 g
Molar mass of X(OH)2 = 1.45/0.025 = 58 g mol-1

(b)
Relative atomic mass of X = 58 - 2(16 + 1) = 24
