Actually, I think that HKU SPACE is certainly a good choice for people who really want to get into university.
I am currently studying in HKU SPACE, a year 2 associate of arts student. I am a direct year two student (since i have C in my language subjects). I saw many people like you, doesnt have good grades in AL and CE, but get great result in SPACE as they work hard.
SPACE, unlike other associate programes, they control the percentages of students getting A grade result, only about 10-20% of student in each programme could get it, so it is fairer to all of the students, and your opportunities to get into university is further increased.
I am a good example. Although my AL result is not satisfactory, I work hard in SPACE and got a really good result!
Now I have received two offers from BU and HKU. BU offers me year 2 ENG , while HKU offers me year 1 BA.
Every year the required GPA for getting back to university is different. Generally speaking, those who get more than 3.0 over 4.0 are safer. If you aim at HKU BA, you at least need to get at least 3.6/3.7.
Certainly, good interview skills could get you a university place. But HKU BA doesnt have interviews, they look at your personal statement and reference letters.
Hope that my answers provide you more understanding about SPACE

well, forgot to tell you what is personal statement. It is actually a 自薦信, telling the university why you are suitable to get in their programme
