So in which way does a termite digest its food?

My science book said oddly 2 things...I know they need to have the microorganism to eat wood but what exactly does it do it said both of these.
1. The microorganism eats the wood in its gut and the waste it leaves behind the termite digests.
2. The microorganism simply is there and it releases a chemical that breaks down the wood for the termite.

So which is it

Both, but mostly the first. It is a very complex system. As well as the little swimming things there are fungi and bacteria and others. Some digest the wood internally, some secrete enzymes which digest it externally (but still in the termite's gut).
