I don't see the difference. There's no reason why we couldn't keeps dogs and cats in farms the same way we do other animals. And their meat also has plenty of protein and iron, like any meat.

@Naiomi - Pigs and cows are not wild animals. They once were, like dogs and cats, but were domesticated thousands of years ago. Also dogs and cats would not be pets if they were on a farm. They would be livestock.

Cats and dogs are pets but they are also carnivores or omnivores.

Except for in times of famine where people have to eat all sorts of food to survive, humans tend to eat farmed animals or animals which are herbivores, hence we eat cows, sheep, deer, pigs etc.

Obviously there are always exceptions to the rule and different cultures/countries will eat animals which another wouldn't. In the U.K. humans wouldn't eat a horse for example, even though a horse is a herbivore, and we don't generally eat goat. Another animaI I can think of is guinea pig, in UK they are pets, but eaten in South America, and I've seen a documentary about Aborigines in Australia who eat cats.

There are different cultural values around the world.

Cats and dogs are considered as protected and 'pets' in Europe but pigs and cows are considered as honors in certain Asian countries due to religion.

Bear in mind that Korea and Switzerland are the only countries that legalized dogs as meat. In China, some parts eat dogs but it is illegal.

Some cultures do eat cat and dog, just like some eat snake too.

Cats and dogs are regarded as pets - in the case of dogs "man's best friend" so for many people the idea of eating them is just inconceivable and as society has dictated against this it's just become the norm so is deemed unacceptable in Westernised society. You may be interested to know that a protester against royal hunting ate a Corgi a year or so back. Apparently it tasted disgusting.

Plus, I'm sure rats have plenty of protein and iron in their meat but I wouldn't particularly fancy one on a sandwich.

it is a culture thing. Some cultures do not eat cows, e.g.: India and some other eat snakes and guinea pigs.

I think it's just cultural - in the same way that we don't eat rats or horses. Availability is an issue too, dogs and cats aren't farmed so their meat isn't available. Given that most people wouldn't want to east cats or dogs it's unlikely that anyone would bother trying top produce them commercially for human consumption.

pigs and cows are wild animals

whereas cats and dogs are domestic pets

would you like anyone to eat your pet ?

Because in the UK cows and pigs aren't classed as "pets"
