Could someone please tell me some common/definable/special characteristics of a 'Dai pai dong'? Are 'Dai pai dong'(s) usually stalls/restaurants which take up the public space on the streets or do they have a little (often crowded) shop which is rented?

Any other details are also welcomed!!

Dai pai dong is a type of open-air food stall once very popular in Hong Kong. The government registration name in Hong Kong is "cooked-food stalls".

To me, Dai Pai Dong is an 'open restaurant' where the kitchen as well as the stall itself is viewable to the public. So, Dai Pai Dong doesn't have a specific building, i.e with doors or windows.

It used to be very popular in Hong Kong because it was cheap and the dishes were served fast. Great for supper.

However, Dai Pai Dong is not as popular as it was before due to hygiene problems and because people are opting for home made food.

The above is my view.
