Coby Electronics are promisinga sub-$100 netbook in stores by March 2009. The PoqetMate-7 andPoqetMate-9 will have 7-inch and 9-inch displays, respectively, and bebased on the Chinese Loongson processor with a keyboard roughly thesame size as the original Eee PC. Both will go on sale in discountstores and drugstores such as Rite Aid Pharmacy andKroger grocery stores, with the PoqetMate-7 retailing for $99.95.

Unsurprisingly, the netbooks will be running Linux and free,open-source software. Coby claims the machines will be good for90-percent of consumer applications, and have drivers for “all majorbrands” of accessories and peripherals.
After the initial two models, Coby will apparently deliver evensmaller netbooks at lower prices. They’ll be followed by “pocket PCswith foldable screens and keyboards” that can collapse to fit into apocket, albeit at a higher initial price.

To qualify for that price, customers have to sign a two-yearAT&T DataConnect mobile broadband service agreement. Saidagreements start at $60 a month. The offer is only good throughChristmas Eve.
Besides its integrated 3G wireless functionality, the 2.44 lb XPHome-based black widget's also got full Wi-Fi capability as well as 1GBof memory, a 160GB hard drive, built-in Web cam and memory card readersand an 8.9-inch LCD screen.
