Vancouver, I will be staying on Hastings street near Burrard street. What should I do?

It seems to be a great area of Vancouver (yes I've been warned about the 'other' part of Hastings...sad)
But what should I do while I am there?
I will be going for work, I've never been there before

thanks

There are lots of cool things in that area. If you go east a little bit, there are some neat shops such as Dressew and other artsy places.

You can hop on the bus and go to Granville Island (it's not far) or you can take the aquabus from yaletown to granville island. There is art, shopping, restaurants, street performers and theatre there.

If you go out towards UBC there are beaches, the museum of anthropology, the planetarium and the botanical gardens.

You are also nice and close to Gastown, which is fun for window shopping and going for a beer. Lots of history and cool shops in that neighbourhood.

You will be nice and close to the bus and skytrain so you can pretty much get anywhere, check out translink.bc.ca

First, what you don't want to do is walk East on Hastings Street. If you go about 10 blocks East - will put you right into the skid row where there is nothing but a bunch of low life druggies, prostitutes, drug dealers, mental people ready to slip their transmission and looks like a zombie movie (thanks to the previous mayor: Sam Sullivan). You are staying in a real nice area with lots to do from shopping on Robson Street, walking a couple blocks to Gastown to taking skytrain East. You can get off at Metro town which is a huge shopping complex. YOu can take the sea bus to North Van and walk up and down lonsdale. You can take a walk and go through Stanley Park. Lots of places to rent bicycles. . . .have fun, enjoy and watch out for the pan handlers . . they are everywhere.

You're in the financial district of downtown Vancouver and Robson St. (shopping) is just a few blocks away. There are tons to do in that area other than work and shop. Because you're not that far from Stanley Park, you can rent a bicycle and go for a ride along the Park. Coffee shops along Robson are great for people-watching. Take the SeaBus to the quay in North Vancouver. Catch a show (if any at during the time you're here) at the Centre or Orpheum, or better yet, go watch a Canucks game at GM Place!

The other part of Hastings is not that bad, I would actually recommend you go check it out during the day time/weekend. There are good restaurants in Gas Town.
