does anyone know what this switch is called? as current flows, it heats up 2 metallic strips and they separate?

someone explained the following switch to me, but was not sure what it was called....basically you have a switch with 2 metallic strips inside....i believe at the start the metallic strips are touching and the circuit is closed...as current flows, the strips heat up and separate, opening the switch...as the metallic strips cool down, the strips come together and close the switch

Bimetallic strip -
Made out of two strips of different metals stuck together, both expand when heated but at different rates. When the temperature rises, the strip heats up and bends because one metal sheet has grown larger than the other. When it reaches a certain point, it separates, opening the switch that cuts off power

This may be called thermal overload relay. A normally closed contact which opens when heated by a bimetal strip. This is used to open circuits of magnetic contactors when allowable current is exceeded.

It is thermostat composed of bimetallic strips.

A bimetallic thermostat?
Usually the two strips are connected, and the uneven expansion contraction causes the assembly to bend, operating a separate toggle switch.
(You get faster make/break action that way, and can handle arcing better.)
What you describe would be limited to very low voltage, low energy applications.

Reed relay and a starter in a tube light set.
