Is it possible to upgrade an engagement ring if I'm not the original buyer?

I was engaged but my fiance cheated on me so I kept the ring... now my current boyfriend and I are thinking about engagement and I was wondering if we could take the ring to a jeweler and have it upgraded if I don't have the receipt and he's not the original buyer?

Also is that tacky?
I don't want to sell it first If i'm going to lose part of the value... while he's going to buy a new one anyways and it would save us money...

About me keeping the ring, my ex didn't want it back. Also about selling it... I wouldn't want my new boyfriend to spend as much money as my ex did, we're both students... but at the same time I feel weird about downgrading

Thanks for all the advice, He is fine with idea as long as i'm still happy. I would lose 50% of the worth if I sold it verses trading it in for something nicer. we're going to look around and make sure that what we get is something completely unique.

You will always get a better deal upgrading rather than selling your old ring and purchasing new.

Most jewelers won't even ask to see a receipt.

um, if I were your BF I would not want you to keep the ring someone else had gotten you. I don't know if you could do this anyways. Just sell it on ebay or craigslist or pawn shop and put the money towards a new one.

can you imagine....oh thats a beautiful ring...."thanks its from my ex-fiance"

you can take the Diamond out and put it into another piece of jewelry including another ring and add to it. I would not keep it as is and i would not sell it! Talk to the new guy about it too!

i think its a good idea
and not really tacky since u both were OK with the decision

and he cheated on u? yeah u deserved the ring
talk to a jeweler and see if they can upgrade it
doesn't even have 2 b the same one the ring came from

I think you should sell the ring but have your new fiance buy you a ring with his own money. How does he feel about your plan? I don't know any men who would feel comfortable with their wife sporting an engagement ring her ex-fiance paid for.

Most jewelers won't ask for a receipt, because lets face it, quite a lot of jewelry is given as a gift, and how many of those gifts actually come with receipts?

I think its smart. You will get a lot more bang for your buck while still making the ring uniquely yours and your fiance's. As long as you are both comfortable with the situation, that's all that really matters. There will inevitably be in-laws or relatives who think this is just atrocious, there always is that one person, but just enjoy your ring and ignore the haters!

p.s. you were right to keep the ring. when he cheated, he broke off the engagement. When he breaks it off, its your choice to keep the ring or not.
Good Luck!

It depends on the jeweler but you may have to take it back where your ex originally bought it and depending of the jeweler you would have to buy something double what the original ring was bought for. You can call and ask around.

no it's not tacky. people re-sell and upgrade rings all the time. it's completely understandable you don't want to wear the ring that cheater gave you for your second engagement! I've never heard of having to prove ownership to have work done on jewelry. I had some earrings re-set into a ring and necklace 2 yrs ago and no one asked me anything. take the ring to any jeweler and ask them what other settings you can put those diamonds into. maybe you can add diamonds to the existing ones you have if they're good quality and color. sometimes if you put good diamonds next to not so great diamonds you can really tell the difference, happened to a friend of mine who got a new anniversary setting.

No, you can't. You can pay to change something on it with your own money. Without the receipt you have no proof of ownership.

In answer to your question Yes, you can take it anywhere it doesn't matter if you have a receipt or not. I do think this is tacky, and you should not have kept the ring regardless of the circumstances.
