2x² - 3x - 2
= (2x + 1)(x - 2)

Done

(2x+1)*(x-2)
2009-04-01 5:38 pm
2x² – 3x – 2 = (x – 2)(2x + 1)
2009-04-01 5:36 pm
2x^2 - 3x - 2
2x^2 - 4x + x - 2
2x(x-2) + (x-2)
(2x + 1)(x - 2)

=(2x+1)(x-2)

using the FOIL method you should end up with 2x^2-3x-2 again.

2x^2 - 3x - 2 = (2x+1)(x - 2)
2009-04-01 5:35 pm
2x^2 - 3x - 2
= 2x^2 + x - 4x - 2
= (2x^2 + x) - (4x + 2)
= x(2x + 1) - 2(2x + 1)
= (2x + 1)(x - 2)

It is a quadratic, so assuming you've learned this:
Let 2x^2 - 3x - 2 = 0

2x^2 - 3x - 2 = 0

Split up -3x into -4x + 1x
2x^2 - 4x + 1x - 2 = 0

Take out a common factor of 2x for the first pair and 1 for the second pair
2x (x-2) + 1(x-2) = 0

Take out a common factor of (x-2)
(x-2) (2x+1) = 0

therefore,

x-2 = 0
x = 2

and

2x+1 = 0
2x = -1
x = -1/2

solutions are x=2 and x=-1/2

(x-2)(2x-1)
