X is an aqueous solution. When X is added in excess to bromine water, the resulting solution is colourless. When X is treated with dilute hydrochloric acid, a gas with an irritating smell evolves. X may be
A. sodium sulphite solution
B. sodium hypochlorite solution
C. ammonium hydrogencarbonate solution
D. ammonium nitrate solution

Since X decolourizes bromine water, it should contain a reducing agent. Therefore answer should be A since sulphite (aqueous form of SO2) is a reducing agent.
Moreover, when sulphite salt is added to an acid, SO2 will be given our.

For B, hypochlorite is an oxidizing agent.
For C, bicarbonate is not an oxidizing nor reducing agent.
For D, ammonium salt has no gas evolved when mixed with acid.
