Which of the following substances cannot be prepared by precipitation? Please explain your answer detailedly.

1. Calcium carbonate
2. Zinc carbonate
3. Silver iodide
4. Magnesium bromide

The answer is 4.

This is because magnesium bromide is soluble in water and thus it CANNOT form precipitate in water.

Calcium carbonate (1) and zinc carbonate (2) are white insoluble solids, and silver iodide (3) are yellow insoluble solids. All of them are insoluble in water, and thus they can form precipitates in water.
