為什麼這兩二位朋友,都用 tried ,不用 try ,因當時環境是即時發問,是present tense? 請各位多指教,,,

why did both of them use the past tense "Tried" and not the present tense "Try" to ask the question? Isn't the use of present tense be more appropriate , as the question was asked at that very moment?
