CFCs or chlorofluorocarbons refers to the group of compounds that halogens bond with alkanes. These were used mainly in air conditioning units.

CFCs will turn into chlorine or chlorine monoxide with the present of UV. Chlorine and chlorine monoxide (may be free radicals or molecules) will react with ozone in which ozone will turn into oxygen.

Cl + O3 → ClO + O2
ClO + O3 → Cl + 2 O2

Since UV present everywhere when the sun is shining, the present of CFCs will deplete the ozone layer.

Acid rain is rain or any other form of precipitation that is unusually acidic. Mainly from sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides which are oxidized by OH free radicals to form sulfuric acid and nitric acid. These pollutants are mainly due to combustion of fossil fuels.

SO2 + OH· → HOSO2·
HOSO2· + O2 → HO2· + SO3
SO3(g) + H2O(l) → H2SO4(l)

NO2 + OH· → HNO3

Acid rain is formed by

H2O + CO2 ----> H2CO3

which is carbonic acid.

For SO2

H2O + SO2 + O2 ------> H2SO4

Which is sulphuric acid.

They mix to form acid rain.
