Two identical particles A and B of mass m are connected by a light inelastic string of length 2L. A rests on a smooth horizontal table and B hangs freely over the table edge. If A is released at a distance L from the edge, find its velocity when it reaches the edge.
Assume that the string is always perpendicular to the edge.

Ans: sqrt{gL}

By the law of energy conservation:

potential energy loss: mgL
particle B has dropped a height of L when A is at the edge

kinetic energy gain: 2 [ 1/2 m (v)^2 ]
2 particles each of mass m traveling at velocity v

solving both equations:
mgL = 2[ 1/2 m (v)^2 ]
==> gL = (v)^2
===> v = sqr( gL )
