When a tourist when to China and ask for direction, the usual reply is look for yourself. In Hong Kong they don't even bother to answer you.

I don't know in HongKong area, but in general Chinese people, particularly in mainland China, have great hospitality. They are friendly and polite to tourists, They will do their best helping people out. Here is a web page talking about Chinese people:

However, I did have some bad experience in HongKong. People in that part of China seem to be arrogant sometimes. I was in a hotel and waited to be checked in. Two receptionists were chatting there and even did not look at me. I was standing by the counter for at least for 5 minutes until I called for their attention. While they turned their heads towards me, one of them almost shouted at me like this, "why can't you wait?" That experience gave me very bad impression.

Other similar incidents happened, too. When I got lost there, I asked for direction repeatedly. Eventually, I got more lost because several guys gave me opposite directions. I wanted to cry that time.

Nevertheless, I don't believe what I experienced in HongKong are representative of entire China.

As HongKong used to be a English colony, some people there more or less want to show their arrogance.

I have found the Chinese people to be very friendly towards tourists! However, if you are repeatedly encountering rude people, then perhaps you should consider how you are asking your question. Are you being polite? Have you learned how to say, "Excuse me?" or "Sorry to trouble you?" Learning just a couple of phrases will go a very long way.

Excuse me - "dui bu qi" (day boo chee)
Sorry to trouble you - "ma fan ni" (ma fahn nee)

It's hard to explain tones in an online posting, so I won't even try. However, most people will understand if you try your best on these two phrases.

Good luck!

Not true!
I am from America (big tall white guy) and visit Hong Kong once a year and have done so for over ten years now. Chinese in Hong Kong are cosmopolitan, busy professional people but are very willing to help a foreigner with directions or whatever. I find them generally polite and helpful. The only time is if they are unable to speak English then they can be shy.
Once I had a man and his wife walk with me several blocks to be sure I found the MTR station.

I dont think so.
maybe they dont speak english, this makes them be shy,
have to avoid your question.
I am a local, and usually some drivers stop and get offto ask me direction, I don't know really, but i can not tell him a wrong way. just reply "i dont know", but i wish they dont misunderstand me. I don't know really,

It depends on how you are asking for directions. For example, if you encountered some locals who speak minimal English, don't assume they are stupid and start yelling at them in English (like they are deaf). They heard you already, so just go ask someone else.

Btw, it's true, I find people in most US cities more rude towards tourists...maybe they've seen enough tourists?

that is not true... you write like a person who has never been to China...

Chinese people are very friendly and it's impossible that a passer-by will not show you a direction...
usually the direction is really shown...
however, it may not be the direction you are seeking for...
it's very common for people to point just there somewhere in case they don't know the way...
but only because saying "no" and "i don't know" is very impolite in China...
while sending you wrong direction isn't viewed as impolite...

culture differences...

It depends on what kind of tourist you are. If you are white, you will be treated favorably. Sounds racist, but that's a fact. Get used to it.

Also you have language barrier to blame.

All right, I have being in China for a few months(almost a year).
They do this is because they afraid you're a cheater!
Because there are always someone lost their money or something expensive when someone ask you for direction!
That's why!

yeah, maybe they are too busy to help you. maybe they were visitors too, and happened to be asked for confused directions. my suggestion is when you ask for a direction, you'd better to ask the people who look better educated or are not in a hurry. In china it is so easy to see people walking by anyway, why do you have to choose the unhappy ones. Life in there is different, streets are always busy, and people on the street are often busy. if you ask a direction from someone who are persisted with personal troubles or urgent matters, I don't think that he really cares ...

Is this what you think or heard or you had try it yourself?
When you ask people for direction, ask alone and leave your friends and families behind. If you have bunch of people surrounding him, then he will be afraid of you. Also, ask people who arent that busy because if you ask a busy store owner he will just tell you to go away. I been to HK and asked directions and everytime they always tell me. Work on your people skills
