U don't need to buy softwares.Use the following ones.They are all free and won't slow down UR PC.Firstly,download Avast Home Edition from www.avast.com.Use a good browser like Firefox.U can get it from www.firefox.com.Lastly,use a good firewall like Comodo.It has Defense+ that prevents unknown and new malware from entering UR PC.But remember-the best way to keep safe is to practice safe habits.Do not download software from questionable sites,do not watch **** and do not open email attachments that U do not know.

If you don't want spend any penny then download either AVG or avast.

If you can buy an antivirus go for Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 which is one of the best antivirus. I love it.

If you are ready to buy licensed software, Norton Anti virus is the best of the lot.
If you want good free anti viruses, you can select between AVG Free and AVAST free edition.

There is no permanent cure... You can't just slap on a program and except to be able to just roam anywhere you want on the internet. No security software available can protect you 100% from malware. Educate yourself and be smart about where you visit and what you click.

Of course, if you don't have ANY anti-virus software, getting some is a HUGE start!

Also consider if you are looking for something that is easy to use that will make choices for you, or something a little more tweakable that may be for a more experienced user. It all comes down to what works for you. Most a-v software companies offer full trials of their software which you can install and get a 'feel' for.

it's my answer but it's totally you choice which you install :
1) avast! (preferred because free,resident scanner,fast update,boot time scan).you can download home edition free of cost from 'http://www.avast.com'
2) avg -- it is more used because it is infective in finding new viruses. you can get on many of sites as 'http://www.download.com'
3) McAfee -- this used by the old user (not updated with current trend) generally it is not more effective as above.
4) Quick-heal -- is very good anti virus compare to avg and McAfee but it is not available for free u can download from it's site 'www.Quickheal.co.in/downloads.asp'
5) kaspersky -- it is also good anti-virus software but it gives problem with some system,it is also not free software u have to buy first and u can download it from 'www.kaspersky.com'
6) avast!(professional) -- is very good anti-virus includes 99% of all security issue, u can buy it's licence by going on the site 'http://www.avast.com'

finally, the decision is yours

I Prefer that best antivirus is Kaspersky 2009 .but you should buy this antivirus by cost not in crack and also you should have internet connection in your home.Because update is coming every two or three day.

Now a days I prefer Avira Professional

I prefer McAfee as I find it's updating and usage easier than norton/symantec.
Check to see if your internet provider gives away free software before buying a licence :-) (as BT do, for example)
You should be able to use AVG for free and do a sweep without buying on MCafee's site too
