From wikipedia: Weathering is the decomposition of earth rocks, soils and their minerals through direct contact with the planet's atmosphere.

Substances that can cause weathering can come from nature, such as physical elements: water or heat; biological elements: mosses. Substances that are artificial such as carbon dioxide or nitrates.

When diluted HCl added to magnesium carbonate or calcium carbonate, carbon dioxide is released as bubbles in the diluted HCl solution.
