Diana puts an umarked thermometer in melting ice,10C water and 40C and the lenghts of the liquid column are I1,I2 and I3 respectively.Which of the following is correct?

A.I3=4(I2)+I1
B.I3=4(I2)
C.I3=4(I2)-3(I1)
D.I3=4X(I2-I1)

The answer is D.

Since the melting point of ice is 0C,

the length of the liquid column in the thermometer increased was
I2 - I1 when the temperature increased from 0C to 10C.

When the temperature increased to 40C, the length of the liquid column in the thermometer should be 4 times of that when the temperature increased from 0C to 10C.

i.e. I3 = 4(I2 - I1)
