Hypothetically speaking, if the Maya ever went to war with the Romans, who would win?

Yes, I do know that the two civilizations never met in real life but imagine if they did.

I was watching a show on the History Channel that talked about Maya warfare and the weapons they used. Consider this: do you think the Maya, a stone age civilization with no metal weaponry (but had some nasty hand-to-hand combat weapons) could go head-to-head with Roman soldiers and possibly give them a run for their (the Romans) money?

The Maya had some pretty amazing weapons such as clubs lined with sharpened obsidian and an axe that was both a tool and a weapon. They also had spears and other stuff too.

The Romans had spears, large knives, and swords. They also had armor, something that the Maya didn't have.

What are your thoughts? Consider also fighting tactics as well as motivations for fighting and/or waging war.

There are several good answers here and I just can't pick one so I'm putting it to a vote.

Hiya,

I'll bet on the Romans.

The Romans had unit tactics, and trained soldiers, with the cohesiveness and espirit de corps that provides. The Romans also had a system for replacement within the century (their basic fighting unit) that provided for a fighting line that did not falter as casualties mounted. Primarily, it is the training and discipline that that made the Romans difficult to beat.

In addition to that, however, the Romans invented and perfected the use of close combat tactics. Throughout their history, and then into the warfare history of Europe until the time of Genghis Khan, the Roman square, and the line of infantrymen it supported, was basically unbeatable in battle.

In small unit infantry tactics, US soldiers still learn how to fight along a line and how to support one another in close combat and hand-to-hand fighting using the same tactics the Romans developed over 2000 years ago.

Although, I know almost nothing about the Maya, their weapons, tactics, or training. A bit of a blind bet, but that's life, eh?

Great Question, by the way!

The Spanish Tercerio that actually conquered Mexico was based on the old Roman legion. With the exception of gunpowder, all the weapons available to the conquistadors who actually defeated the Aztecs and descendants of Mayan civilization were possessed by the Roman legion as well. The two big factors were metalworking and discipline, both features were shared by the Spanish army and the Roman army of ancient times. I would say that more or less, a Roman legion did conquer Mexico.

The Romans have a better edge. Literally, the Romans had learned how to use iron in making weapons. It was enough to beat the Greeks who had bronze weapons. Up until the time they faced the Romans they controlled the known world at the time.

The Roman mobile battle line is still used in modern conventional warfare to this day. The Mayans don't stand a chance.

The Romans for sure, i mean their war strategies were far more advanced than the maya. actual formations, catapults, balliastas and some of the greatest generals of Roman times..i really doubt rome could have expanded its empire beyond africa and the same for maya..but yeah rome would have to take some time to actually conquer them completly and if they didnt take the fights seriously, like a joke then they would lose alot of men..

Iron breaks stone, cuts wood. Armor beats unarmored. Win- Romans.

I think Roman will win this war but something not is say Roman can win that Roman can win, that depend on something is good or bad not easy to say. For example, the weapon is old or the soldier not enough strong. And many reason affect the result

This is a great question!

As for weaponry...Im going to say they are equal in their own personal way. Both peoples have absolutely perfected their weapons for their way of life. I think the key here is motivation, as you mentioned. What are they fighting for? Who invaded first?

Probably, the winner would emerge from whomever has home court advantage. First rule of war is you don't fight in an unknown habitat.

So, lets say that it is common battleground. If we are simply comparing "styles" of warfare. I would edge the Maya over the Romans from the shear chaotic nature they would introduce to a battlefield. The Romans would be suffering from a fear factor. They are used to something slightly more "organized". Nothing worse than a savage people who look like (that they perceive to be) demons attacking you.

There are just too many intangibles to confront here. Great question, but we may never know the answer.

The Mayans were more of a hethen type of society so I would say that the Romans were more educated in war manuevers but I do think the Mayans would win anyways because most of the time savagery wins.

It would depend on where the fight was.
In Mexico, the Maya could have gotten the Romans into the jungle. Romans were excellent in open country, but bad when trapped in the woods.

Weapons-wise, the Romans significantly outpower the Maya.
Metal swords, spears and shields would be destroy Mayan clubs.

While both empires believed in conquest and tribute, the Romans were far more ambitious. Their empire was far larger than the Maya.

Interesting question.
