During starvation, the liver synthesizes glucosefrom lactate and amino acids through a process called gluconeogenesis. Lactate and amino acids areoxidized to pyruvate and oxaloacetate which support glucosesynthesis.

Conversion of pyruvate into PEP requires GTP. A byproduct of GTP is CO2. As a result of this reaction, the CO2 concentration in the liver would increase during starvation.
