Is it true that Sushi and Sashimi can harm people?

My teacher told us a story about the Japanese people eating raw fish such as sushi and sashimi. He told us that after they ate these raw specialties, Parasitic worms sprouted of their heads! Totally disgusting and their hairs were fallen. Such raw meat contains parasites and worms if they are not cooked.

What the hell? Your teacher is an intolerant moron.

You can definitely get sick from sushi, but it's SO rare that it's not even worth worrying about.

I've been eating sushi for over 17 years, and I have NEVER had parasites from it, EVER. I eat it on a regular basis, too.

And by the way, sushi is not raw fish. Sushi is seasoned rice with some other type of ingredient.

Yes, it is possible to get parasitic infections from sushi but it will be a gastro-intestinal infection, worms would not sprout from people's heads.

Anisakiasis is a parasitic disease contracted from infected seafood which is eaten raw or marinated. This is a type of round worm which can be picked up from eating sashimi, sushi, and ceviche.

Symptoms are variable and can range from an acute syndrome with nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain or diarrhea within 12 hours of eating infected seafood to other problems which can last weeks to months. Anisakiasis can mimic other diseases, such as acute appendicitis, stomach tumors, and inflammatory bowel disease.

HAHA...if that's the case, then people shouldn't eat burgers either because the meat from burgers come from mad cows with mad cow disease and after one eats it, s/he would become a crazy lunatic, running around on the fields like mad cows, too! And people shouldn't eat caviar either, because you never know if those tiny eggs you're eating might just grow into little fish in your stomach, unless you're trying to start an aquarium in your body.

Yes, raw meat (not just fish) if not treated properly can make someone really sick - from mild diarrhea and vomiting to stomach pains that requires hospitalization. However, if that should happen, the restaurant would be sued with their license taken away from the health board. In terms of raw meat, that includes anything eaten raw (ie. sashimi) and/or undercooked (ie. the nice juicy piece of medium-rare steak).

Yes it could happen if the fish was handled properly accord to the FDA law!!!! but you teach is just overexaggerated about the sprouting out of the head part.

Yes it's true but... the risk can be reduced by put wasabi on it. But many people doesn't like to put it so no wonder if it happened. I just knew one case only. I've seen the pictures.
