I think your friend is confused rouge with lipsticks. A food additive named "carmine" is used in manufacturing lipsticks. It is a red dye and used in many food stuff such as candies, ice-cream, jellies ... etc.
Carmine is made from insects.

As long as you are not allergic to it or you are a vegetarian. I don't think you should worry too much.
