The log decks were doubly wrapped in opaque polyethylene sheeting, 0.2 mm thick, and made airtight by melding two covering sheets together to prevent gas exchange. At the start of the experiment 12 log decks were gassed with carbon dioxide, 8 decks with nitrogen while 4 decks were left ungassed.

No quality detoration due to wood-destroying fungi or insect infestation occurred. Hence, in case of further calamities forestry practice could be provided with a new, particularly safe round timber storage method.
