Getting my guinea pig not to be shy?

2009-03-04 12:11 am
I had a guinea pig before and he warmed up to me right away. I just got a female pig a day ago and shes really shy. Should i wait a week or so until she becomes use to her surroundings before holding her. Shes gets really scared when i put my hand in the cage and runs away from me. I don't want to scare her to death. Is it better to wait or will she only become unshy if i keep handling her?

For all you ppl that have nothing but stupid things to say go find something better to do. This is why i have pets because ppl are reatarded creatures that have no respect for there own kind. Animlas are loving beautiful things that could take the place of any human in my life and i will care for them more then anything in the world and do anything to make sure there as happy as they can be. I chose to bring this animal into my life so i will do anything to make sure shes happy. I do feed her right i'm not sticking my hands in there for fun i put my hands in her cage to FEED her how else to you excpect me to get in in there morons. I'm not putting my hands in there every min. I need some mature inteligent ppl to answer my question and not a bunch of brainless children. Ppl have pets because they love animals not because they have no life or no boyfriend. How could a boyfriend possiable fufil my life. I'm not a dumb stay in the kitchen house wife. I make my own decsions in life.

Wait a week. So she gets used to her surroundings. Also give her smaller portions of her food more frequently. So she associates your hand with good things. You can also talk to her in your normal voice so she gets used to the sound.

Don't push her to quickly or you will make it an even slower process of getting her wanting to come to you.

try plaacing your hand in the cage (this might take several minutes) and place a treat on it. leave it in there, even if the pig is scared, and running around. let them come over to you, eat it, and put another on it. this will make them comfortable with you.

Yes, it's best to wait until about a week so she can get used to her new surroundings.

Not all guinea pigs are shy like that, but some are. They all have different personality's. It's normal.

But she will get used to you eventually. And I also agree with most people, you should get another female for her so she doesn't get lonely.

All the best!

A guinea pig warming up quickly is a rare occurrence. You got lucky with that one. Your current piggie is more typical. If you only got her a day ago, she needs time to adjust to her environment. Don't handle her for another day or two. Just let her be. After that, just take her out, pet her, talk to her. Do this very often. Try giving her treats from your hand. Start off just setting the treats near her, then closer and closer to you, then eventually from your hand. The more you handle them the more used to you they get. It takes patience, because guinea pigs are skittish creatures by nature.

PS.
I also agree with the person who said to get another. They do better in groups and their moods are much better, you really can tell the difference.

Well start out slow. First just keep her a few feet from you. Maybe sit in a closed off area where she can only stay near you. Then gradually make the pen smaller and bring food set it in your lap and eventually she will crawl on your lap and munch on the veggie you have put on lap. Do this once a day and only for about 8 to 10 minutes any longer she will become stressed and may make herself sick.

Guinea pigs are always much happier when they have a friend. I've always kept them in pairs or groups. You can instantly tell the difference, they 'popcorn' more and are more affectionate.

Buy another female, but make sure you double check the gender because you don't want a whole load of guineas.

Are you letting her out every day? They need at least half an hour running in an outdoor or indoor pen (when using an out door pen, provide proper shade and water so they don't overheat).

When she's out, sit inside or by the pen and be very very still. Quietly throw bits of carrot or timothy hay towards her so she sees you as a food source, and not a predator. Let her come to you, when she smells you, don't go to pet her. Just stay still. Increase how much you move (don't touch her) over time, and then when she's used to that, you can pet and groom her.

Always try to imagine what it's like in her shoe - being alone apart from a huge creature that is looming over you. They're prey animals, so they're naturally very fearful therefor it should always be up to them to initiate socialization.

you should start to treat it with care
always try to feed it using ur hands and give him snacks frequently
this is the best way to teach them to be handled
good luck and i hope you guy's have an amazing friendship
good luck :]

i also had a shy guinea pig when i was younger. you don't want to pick them up if they run away every time u put ur hand in the cage, but try gently petting her. that way she won't be that scared. do that for a few days until u can pick her up. hope it works they're really sweet!
