在這個情況下，應該用 could join，因為如果用 joined，就無咗 "能夠" 的意思。假如本來的句子喺 You join this club，你直接轉造 past tense 就喺用 You joined this club.

You can join this club. that means everybody can do so
You could join this club . That means similar to the above but not so definite or it is in the past as could is the past tense of can
