甚麼人會被為稱為詩人科學家

「詩人科學家」這個稱號和一個名為 Lewis Thomas Prize (路易斯湯瑪斯獎) 的獎項有關。

Lewis Thomas Prize 是一個表揚 Writing about Science 的獎項，是Rockefeller University (洛克菲勒大學) 每年對一些科學家作家頒發的大獎 (......to scientists deemed to have accomplished a significant literary achievement)。

Torsten N. Wiesel, M.D. (President of Rockefeller University) 在1996年曾說過：
「獲得這個獎項的科學家作者們，他們的意見和觀點能向人們揭示科學的美學和哲學維度，不僅提供新的資訊，而且還能像詩歌和繪畫一樣引起人們的沉思、甚至啟示」。
(The Thomas Prize honors "the rare individual who bridges the worlds of science and the humanities -- whose voice and vision can tell us about science's aesthetic and philosophical dimensions, providing not merely new information but cause for reflection, even revelation as in a poem or painting," )

由於Lewis Thomas Prize在肯定那些科學家作者們的寫作技巧的同時，也充分概括了他們對科學的美學和哲學層面上的思考，故此獲得這個獎項的科學家們又被稱為 [詩人科學家]。

被用來命名這個獎項的美國微生物學家和免疫學家路易斯湯瑪斯（Lewis Thomas，1913－1993）就是一個把科學寫得跟文學作品一樣優美的成功典範。(Lewis Thomas was a physician, poet (詩人), etymologist (詞源學家), essayist (作家), administrator, educator, policy advisor, and researcher....)

【詩人科學家】一書的作者們 (楊振寧、李遠哲、朱經武、張亞勤、李開復等) 都是當今科學界和科技產業界極具份量的大師和名人。在該書中他們共同探討21世紀人類面臨的挑戰：環境污染、人口爆炸、糧食缺乏、水資源匱乏、能源短缺等問題，就正如Torsten N. Wiesel, M.D. (President of Rockefeller University) 在1996年曾說 「他們的意見和觀點……不僅提供新的資訊，而且還能……引起人們的沉思、甚至啟示」。
