3.Dilute sulphuric acid is often used to acidify potassium permanganate solution.But dilute HCl acid is not suitable for this purpose because

a. The oxidation number of Cr decreases from +6 to +3.
a. Cr 的氧化數由 +6 降至 +3。

b. The oxidation number of Mn decreases from +7 to +2.
a. Mn 的氧化數由 +7 降至 +2。

(1) is not a redox reaction. There is no change in oxidation number.
(1) 不是氧化還原反應,因為沒有氧化數改變。

(2) is a redox reaction. MnO2 is reduced, because the oxidation number of Mn decreases from +4 to +2; HCl is oxidized, because the oxidation number of Cl increases from -1 to 0.
