sulphite ions + acid gives ???

the full question is why sulphite ions + acidified Vanadium(V) becomes Vanadium (IV), although when we look at the Electrode potential, it is feasible to become Vanadium(III)?

Sulphite ions react with dilute strong acid (e.g. HCl) to give sulphur dioxide gas.

SO32-(aq) + 2H+(aq) → H2O(l) + SO2(g)
