Under acidic conditions, ethanol reacts with dichromate (VI) ions
quantitatively to give ethanoic acid and chromium (lll) ions

Write an equation for the reaction of ethanol with dichromate (Vl)
ions under acidic conditions.

用咩方法寫equation,,, 我試過用 half equation 的方法..,
但唔識寫ethanol轉 ethanoic acid 的half equation = =

In organic reaction, oxidation is the reaction of gaining [O] or losing [H], while reduction is the reaction of losing [O] or gaining [H]. The overall equation can be balanced by the transfer of [O].

Reduction of acidified dichromate(VI) ions:
Cr2O72- + 8H+ → 2Cr3+ + 4H2O + 3[O] ...... (*)

Oxidation of ethanol:
CH3CH2OH + 2[O] → CH3COOH + H2O ...... (#)

2(*) + 3(#) to cancel all [O]:
3CH3CH2OH + 2Cr2O72- + 16H+ → 3CH3COOH + 4Cr3+ + 8H2O
=
