時裝這個名詞,在英語中是「Fashion」,它又是「時髦」、「流行」的意思。時裝和流行、時髦有密切關係。時裝的核心就是不斷地變化,變化的本質,也就是時裝和成衣、服裝之間的區別。進入時裝時代,首先要有品牌意識和流行風格意識。
時裝起源於1905年前後,現代意義上的時裝,真正地成為設計師可以駕馭的創造和取得商業上的成功,使時裝成為國際性的大產業,是1960年代之後的事情。品牌的作用是推動流行,一旦成為流行就可批量生產,創造利潤。由於這個觀念的改變,時裝設計師和市場人員、廣告人密切配合,也和新聞媒體配合,製造流行,時裝因此進入以國際市場營銷為中心,以樹立和推廣品牌為核心的活動。
