I'm a honey colored African American and I'm wondering if they would be harsh on me if I visit Tokyo, Japan.

as far as I know, we japanese dont care skin color.
Black is Kokujin in Jpanese . White is Hakujin .

we hardly use these words, all of foreign people are Gaijin for Jpanaese.

and most of japanese are not good at communicating with another country's people who is not only white , black , but also yellow.
there are lots of kind of races in USA.
but Japan is an island country, they have not been used to communicate with another race.
so Americans think Japanese are shy people.
And Black people think that they do not make a communication well because of their color.
that is their misunderstanding.

These are why
1.Japanese are not good at speaking english
2.they are not used to communicate with forign people
3.Black people have a persecution complex because of american and european history.

We Japanese do not care color

Not exactly harsh, they are much too polite. But in general most Japanese aren`t really excited about foreigners, no matter what color their skin is. The younger ones are curios and a little more open minded, but many are very difficult to approach. My (white) cousin lived in Japan for more than ten years and it took him more than six years to find some friends (and he even spoke the language fluently before he immigrated).

I lived there for more than 2 years. I don't recall seeing any black women with Japanese men.

It totally depends on how you behave when you're in Japan. Japanese aren't harsh on people just because of their skin color, and many Japanese people are very nice and friendly towards tourists. Just be on your best behavior and you will be well-treated.

Of the times I visited Japan, I've seen many non-Asian tourists who were polite and well-treated by the Japanese. The only time that I saw annoying non-Japanese is in Roppongi (the corner of Almond Cafe). The guys were macking on the girls (Japanese and non), yelling on the streets, etc. like they would back home in the 'hood. Do that and you'll not be treated well.

Japanese in general only see blacks in Rap videos and gangster films so the image is not so great. When I was there the main black videos I would see was Public Enemy which was not the best PR. Also blacks are thought to have a lot more AIDS in Japan and some have a fear that AIDS can be spread by sneezing. Hopefully Obama and Will Smith may have improved the image a bit. An Obama shirt may help...

The Japanese are very race conscious and consider themselves very different than Chinese, Korean or other Asians-- more-so than Europeans think of themselves different from German, French, and English. Even the Yakuza(Japanese gangsters) are thought to be ethnically different than other Japanese with curly hair instead of straight and a strong accent.

A black sailor killed a 56 yo Japanese woman a few years ago and it was a major story. Murder hardly ever happens in Japan and the Black on Japanese crime made national news.

If you visit, you'll generally be OK, especially given that you are a woman. Living there is a totally different story though.

Japanese people generally look down upon Blacks and if they accept a foreigner, they'll accept whites. Many japanese worship and adore whites. It follows that they'll put Blacks down.

Also, it's nearly impossible for a black to get romantically involved with a japanese. Statistics show that japanese girls would be more likely to get with a Black man than a japanese man with a Black woman. However, Black men are seen as horndogs while white men are desired (despite the fact that white guys are horndogs too, AND they are successful in bedding many japanese women). Kinda ironic, but that's how it goes. It has more to do with image than personal behavior. Whites get away with murder while Blacks that mind their own business are accused of it. You might make friends in the hiphop subculture that exists out there, but you have to be stereotypical to a T.

Obama's Shoes makes a good point. The media portrays us as mostly hiphop and most of that is negative. Also, if AIDS is spread in japan, it's spread by white men and other races since they're the ones "gettin' some". Black guys don't get laid in japan, so we don't spread AIDS there. We still get blamed for it though. That's how the world works.
