Heat conduction in a substance is attributed by the presence of free electrons. Heat causes more vigorous vibration of these free electrons, and the vigorous vibrations are conveyed by the free electrons through collisions from one end of the substance to the other, thus transferring heat.
Since metals are normally have more free electrons than non-metals, metals are therefore good conductors of heat. Non-metals, generally possess much less free electrons, are bad conductor of heat.
