An optical illusion is using color, shape, and position to confuse the human brain when it interprets the image viewed by the eyes.
A simple example is a picture of a major league ball player viewed from a distance. But, when the viewer steps closer, he/she sees the image is actually comprised of hundreds of very small pictures of that same player, which are in a proper color, shape, and position to give the illusion, at a distance, that you are really looking at one large picture of that individual.
