use quadratic function

[-b +/- sqrt( b*2 - 4ac) ] / 2a

a = 3
b = -4
c = -1

plug it all in solve and you should get

x = 2/3 + sqrt(7)/3
and
x = 2/3 - sqrt(7)/3

Enjoy.

3x^2 - 10x + 5 = 0 a = 3 b = -10 c = 5 [-b ± √(b^2 - 4ac)] / 2a [-(-10) ± √(-10)^2 - 4 * 3 * 5)] / (2 * 3) (10 ± √40) / 6 (10 ± 2√10) / 6 x = (5 ± √10) / 3 do the others the same way

x = [ 4 ± √ (16 + 12) ] / 6
x = [ 4 ± √ (28) ] / 6
x = [ 4 ± 2√7 ] / 6
x = [ 2 ± √7 ] / 3

3x^2 - 4x - 1 = 0
x = [-b ±√(b^2 - 4ac)]/2a

a = 3
b = -4
c = -1

x = [4 ±√(16 + 12)]/6
x = [4 ±√28]/6
x = [4 ±√(2^2 * 7)]/6
x = [4 ±2√7]/6
x = [2 ±√7]/3

∴ x = [2 ±√7]/3

3x^2-4x-1=0
x^2 - (4/3)x -1/3 = 0
[x- 2/3]^2 -1/3 - 4/9 = 0
(x- 2/3)^2 - (√7/3)^2 = 0
(3x - 2)^2 - (√7)^2 = 0
(3x - 2 + √7)(3x - 2 - √7) =0

plug it into the quadratic formula!
2009-02-09 8:16 am
3x^2-4x-1=0
x = -b/2a +/- sqrt(b^2 -4 ac)/2a
-b/2a = + 2 / 3
sqrt(| b^2 -4 ac | )/2a = + .881917
x = 1.54858377035486
x = - .21525

No, you can not factor it. You need to plug your coefficients into the quadratic formula to get your solutions.
