"plug it in" (the "-2" in place of "x")

f(x) = x^2-2x+4

f(-2) = (-2)^2 - 2(-2) + 4
f(-2) = 4 + 4 + 4 ........ [note: -2*(-2) = +4 ]

Substituting x for -2

f (-2) = (-2)^2 - 2(-2) + 4 = 4+4+4 = 12

f(x) = x^2 - 2x + 4
f(-2) = (-2)^2 - 2(-2) + 4
f(-2) = 4 - (-4) + 4
f(-2) = 4 + 4 + 4
f(-2) = 8 + 4
f(-2) = 12

put -2 as the value of x since it is asking for the function of x. Then the result will be the value of y. So it is asking, "what is y when x is this?"

You put -2 in where all the x's are.

e.g.;

f(x) = x^2 - 2x + 4

f(-2) = (-2)^2 - 2(-2) + 4

= 4 - (-4) + 4

= 4 + 4 + 4

= 12
