(*) X 1,2= (-b (+)(-) (b^2 - 4ac)^(1/2))/2a a=1, b= (-6), c= (-2)

= (6 (+)(-) (36+8)^(1/2)/2

= (6 (+)(-) 2 (11 ^ (1/2))/2

X 1 = 3+11^(1/2), 3+ square root of eleven

X 2 =3-11^(1/2) 3- square root of eleven

The problem was solved using the quadratic formula indicated by the (*) sign above.

x = [ 6 ± √ (36 + 8) ] / 2
x = [ 6 ± √ (44) ] / 2
x = [ 6 ± 2√11 ] / 2
x = 3 ± √11

This is in the form of ax^2 + bx + c = 0
Therefore x = -b +or- (b^2 -4ac)^0.5 / 2a
By substituing a = 1 ; b = -6 ; c = -2,
We get x = 3 +or- (11)^0.5
x = 9.94987 or -0.31662

Use the formula-
For a quadratic equation of form ax^2+bx+c=0,we have
X=( -b+-squart(b^2-4ac))/2a.
Using this you will be getting
x=3+-squart(11).

x^2 - 6x - 2 = 0
x = [-b ±√(b^2 - 4ac)]/2a

a = 1
b = -6
c = -2

x = [6 ±√(36 + 8)]/2
x = [6 ±√44]/2
x = [6 ±√(2^2 * 11)]/2
x = [6 ±2√11]/2
x = 3 ±√11

∴ x = 3 ±√11

yes if you take the zeros of the equation (which i did using my TI-89 Graphing Calculator) then you get
x= 6.3166 and
x= -.3166 as your x values which are also where the graph crosses the x axis and are known as the "roots" of the parabolic function

search youtube for "down under" factoring, and you can learn the easy way to do it, so you dont always ask people on YA and fail your tests. Also learn the quadratic equation, because obviously you have learned nothing from your math class.
