The '50' in the term LD50 (Lethal Dose 50) denotes a probability of 50%. That is, half of the number of affected objects will die if they are fed with a dose of 10 mg of drug for every unit mass of the experimental object.
For example, if an experimental object is of mass, say 10 kg, the LD50 for it will be 10 mg/kg x 10 kg = 100 mg
Looking at another view, if a specific experimental object is fed with the amount of LD50 of drug (i.e. 100 mg for a 10 kg mass object), it will have a chance of 50% dying.
