1.
In the hydrocarbon, mole ratio C : H
= 3.6/12 : 1.2/1
= 0.3 : 1.2
= 1 : 4
The empirical formula = CH4

Let the molecular formula be (CH4)n.
Molar mass of the hydrocarbon = (3.6 + 1.2)/0.3 = 16 g mol-1
n(12 + 1x4) = 16
n = 1
Hence, molecular formula = CH4

=====
2.
Let the molecular formula be Xn.

n(31) = 124
n = 4
Hence, the molecular formula = X4

=====
3.
In 5.42 g of the chloride of mercury:
Mass of Cl = 1.42 g
Mass of Hg = 5.42 - 1.42 = 4 g

Mole ratio Hg: Cl
= 4/200.6 : 1.42/35.5
= 0.0199: 0.04
= 1 : 2
The empirical formula = HgCl2

Let the molecular formula be (HgCl2)n.
n(200.6 + 35.5x2) = 272
n = 1
Hence, molecular formula = HgCl2

=====
4.
Let the relative atomic mass of M be y.

The formula of sulphide of M is M2S3.
Mole ratio M : S
6.21/y : 11.04/32 = 2 : 3
3(6.21/y) = 2(11.04/32)
y = (3/2)(6.21)(32/11.04)
y = 27

The relative atomic mass of M = 27
=
