Gung Hei Fat Choy doesn't mean Happy New Year

Gung Hei Fat Choy:

Gung Hei = 恭喜 = congratulations
Fat Choy = 發財 = prosperous, become wealthy

Together it means "wish you the best of wealth"

If you want "Happy New Year" it's "新年快樂"

Usually translated as "Happy New Year," it's Cantonese.

More literally: Good luck, may fortune come your way.

Gong hei fat choy.
It's an idiom in many Chinese dialects, mainly of Mandarin.
It's perhaps a pretty dumb idiom, the literal meaning translates to Lucky Work, Good Pay.
We Chinese figuratively mean:
Good fortune, come your way.
Do not take this as a racist answer, I am Chinese myself and purely respect all religions. My answer may supposedly be incorrect, but if so, I apologize for my inconvenience.
